The HGV Licensing Process

Getting your HGV licence involves several steps. We guide you through every single one.

D4 Medical

Visit a doctor for your Group 2 medical examination. This includes vision, blood pressure, and general health checks. Costs around £50-£120. Valid for 4 months.

Provisional Licence

Submit your D2 application form and D4 medical to DVLA. This adds provisional HGV entitlement to your licence. Allow 2-3 weeks for processing.

Theory Tests

Pass the LGV theory test (100 questions, 85 to pass) and hazard perception test (19 clips, 67/100 to pass). We provide full study support and materials.

Practical Training & Test

Your hands-on training with us followed by your DVSA practical test. Professional 1-to-1 instruction tailored to your licence category, with test preparation included.

Frequently Asked Questions

From start to finish, the typical timeline is 6-10 weeks. This includes your D4 medical (1 day), DVLA provisional processing (2-3 weeks), theory tests (can be booked within 1-2 weeks), and practical training and test (3-8 days depending on course). We help you plan the most efficient timeline possible.
All our courses start from £1,999 for 2 half days of professional 1-to-1 training. Contact us for a personalised quote. There are no hidden extras. Finance options are available.
A D4 Medical is a Group 2 medical examination required for all HGV and PCV licences. It includes vision tests, blood pressure checks, and a general health assessment. You can get one from your GP or a registered medical clinic. In the Hull area, we can recommend local providers. The cost is typically £50-£120 and it's valid for 4 months.
Some of our courses include assessments as part of the training. Our team will explain the full requirements for each course when you enquire.
We offer Category C1 (7.5 Tonne), Category C (Rigid/Class 2), Category C+E (Artic/Class 1), and C + C+E Combined courses. All from £1,999 for 2 half days of professional 1-to-1 training. Contact us to discuss which course best suits your needs.
You must be at least 18 years old to drive an HGV. You must hold a full UK Category B (car) driving licence. There is no upper age limit, though medical examinations become more frequent after age 45 (every 5 years) and annually from age 65.
